October ObservancesOf all the many public-health observances, it seems to me that October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the biggest. Pink ribbons festoon everything from yogurt lids to designer jeans, while survivors, supporters, and advocates log millions of miles and raise millions of dollars in races and walks all over the country. | |
Eating less meat is often cited as a way to reduce the risk of breast cancer, so it is perhaps appropriate that October is also Vegetarian Awareness Month. Although strict vegans and vegetarians make up less than 5% of the general population, they account for a whopping 30% of Nutrition Data users, according to our informal poll. If you're interested in exploring a vegetarian eating plan, there's both good news and bad—but the bad news isn't all that bad! You can read more about what makes a healthy vegetarian diet as well as more about the links between diet and breast cancer on the Nutrition Data Blog.
